2020 Toyota Corolla Hybrid Drivers' Notes | A Prius alternative

Image
The 2020 Toyota Corolla Hybrid marks the first time we've seen a hybrid powertrain in a Corolla in the U.S. It uses the same hardware as the Prius , consisting of a 1.8-liter four-cylinder and single electric motor that combine for 121 horsepower. So no, the power numbers aren't scintillating, but the EPA fuel economy figures are. The Corolla Hybrid is rated at 53 mpg city, 52 mpg highway and 52 mpg combined. Those numbers put it right on pace with the 52 mpg combined rating of the Prius LE (though the Prius Eco achieves 56 mpg combined). Its price is significantly less than the Prius LE, though — at just $24,055, it's $2,435 less. Impressive stuff, but the Prius is more practical with its hatchback body. You can also get the stripper Prius L Eco for just $25,280, closing the gap by a bit. Galaxy Buds+ review: Samsung finally has a worthy AirPods alternative

Image
I really wanted to like the original Galaxy Buds . They're some of the best-designed true wireless earbuds I tested last year. They're tiny, which makes them comfortable (well, as much as earbuds can be), and they came with a wireless charging case at a time when that still wasn't a standard feature. However, the audio quality was disappointing, call performance was subpar, and limited customization for on-board controls was frustrating. With the new Galaxy Buds+ ( $150 ), Samsung improved its wireless earbuds in many ways, but some things still need work. One thing that doesn't need fixing is the design. I thought Samsung nailed that last time, so I'm actually glad to see it return. In fact, the Galaxy Buds+ look damn near identical to the previous model. The earbuds are still very small compared to much of the competition, which increases comfort (even for extended periods) and they're a bit more discreet, too. The only real difference b...

Banco Safra creates proprietary alternative investments division

SAO PAULO, Feb 21 (Reuters) - Brazil's fourth-biggest private-sector lender Banco Safra SA has created a new division to manage alternative proprietary investments, the bank confirmed on Friday. Safra hired Andre Laloni, former director at development bank BNDES and former chief financial officer at state lender Caixa Economica Federal as the head of the new division, a Safra press representative said. Two sources with knowledge of the matter said the proprietary alternative investment division will look for private equity deals and other illiquid investments, including illiquid debt and special situations. The bank also will look for real estate deals. The new division may have up to 10 employees. Safra's move into riskier assets comes as Brazil's benchmark interest rate reaches the all-time low of 4.25% and investors switch from government bonds to stocks and other higher-return assets. Lebanese-Brazilian banker Joseph Safra, who owns Banco Safra in Brazil and J. Safra Sa...

Florida education news: Term limits, alternative schools and teacher discipline

IS EIGHT ENOUGH? Florida lawmakers have to leave their seats after eight years in office. So why not members of the stateĆ¢€™s 67 school boards, right? Waqf Board accepts alternative site, will decide on Monday how to use it

The UP Sunni Central Waqf Board on Friday said it does not have the option to reject the alternative piece of land given to it under the Supreme Court's Ayodhya verdict but will decide how to use it when it meets on Monday. In a historic verdict in November on the Ramjanmabhoomi-Babri Masjid dispute, the Supreme Court ruled in favour of construction of a temple. It also ruled that an alternative five-acre plot must be found for a mosque. Soon after the verdict, there were suggestions that the board should not accept the land. "Following the Supreme Court verdict, the Sunni Waqf Board does not have the choice of rejecting the five-acre alternative land for the construction of a mosque in Ayodhya as it would amount to contempt of court," Farooqui said. "We had been saying since the very beginning that we will abide by the court verdict on the issue, and because of this we did not go in for a review of the verdict. There has been no shift in our stand...
