New App Provides Alternative To E-ZPass For Virginia Tolls

VIRGINIA — Private toll operator Transurban announced a new app providing an alternative to paying tolls with E-ZPass.

The GoToll app lets drivers use cashless toll lanes and pay through a smartphone app. Drivers will add their license plate and credit card before using toll lanes. The app uses GPS to detect a toll road trip in real time. The app sends a notification after your trip, and you can pay the toll within 48 hours. If it's not paid within 48 hours, your card will be automatically charged.

In Northern Virginia, the app can be used on the Interstate 395, 95, 495 and 66 Express Lanes inside the Beltway and Dulles Toll Road. The Dulles Greenway is not included. In Hampton Roads, the app covers the 64 Express Lanes, Chesapeake Expressway, George P. Coleman Bridge, South Norfolk Jordan Bridge, Dominion Boulevard and Elizabeth River Tunnels (midtown and downtown).

According to the GoToll website, the app is geared toward drivers "who don't already have an E-ZPass account but want the control of managing toll road usage without a commitment." The app does not require preloaded funds to be put toward tolls. There is a $0.85 service fee per trip.

Transurban is the private company that operates the 395, 95 and 495 Express Lanes. The Virginia Department of Transportation operates the 66 Express Lanes inside the Beltway, and Metropolitan Washington Airports Authority operates Dulles Toll Road.
