Michael Bloomberg: if the alternative is Donald Trump, my party will learn to love me

They came in their hundreds to Rocketown, Nashville, on Wednesday night. Young, old, black, white, they wanted a free T-shirt, a complimentary barbecue dinner and a chance to check out the only Democratic candidate campaigning last week in Tennessee: Michael Bloomberg.

It was unlike any other primary campaign event — countless staffers buzzing around, freebies for all. You could feel the heft of it, the scale, the impossibly deep pockets funding this increasingly probable run for president.

"He seems like the person who can get the job done," said Walter Ryan, a retired air force veteran. "Him being a billionaire lets me know that he's successful. I think Bloomberg v Trump would be a heavyweight bout."

Bloomberg has taken a billion-dollar gamble on the presidency.
