Podcasts grow as alternative media form

Sheletta Brundidge could have used TV, blogs, YouTube, books, radio or newspapers. Instead, she chose podcasts. Her mission was to present the stories of black people, and she concluded that podcasts were best way to do it. "Everyone is making podcasts," said Brundidge, a Cottage Grove radio producer who launched seven podcasts on Feb. 1. They are among the 850,000 podcasts and 30 million total episodes in the U.S., according to podcastinsights.com . Podcast income is exploding, with advertising revenue increasing four-fold in five years to $679 million, according the website buzzsprout.com . Fans of podcasts say they are flexible and utterly democratic. The barriers to entry are low, and there are no lists of regulations. They can be a few minutes or several hours long.
