If facing possible drug interactions, search for alternative meds

Dear Dr. Roach • I am writing about a concerning development with my 67-year-old husband. After more than a year of taking a 10 mg dose of escitalopram, his internist increased the dose to 20 mg. This vastly improved his depression symptoms over the past year. For many years, he has taken flecainide for atrial fibrillation. In early December, a nurse from his cardiologist’s office called, concerned about possible interaction between escitalopram and flecainide. I told her that he had taken escitalopram for a long time with no problems. However, during his subsequent office visit, the cardiologist persuaded him to stop taking escitalopram. These are my concerns: It doesn’t seem like a good idea to stop taking the depression medication cold turkey. There was no attempt by the doctor to find possible alternatives. My husband’s depression symptoms have come roaring back, greatly impacting his behavior. Any thoughts on where to go with this? â€" R.R. Answer • Flecainide is ...

Moderate voters feel no urgency to cut field and coalesce around Bernie Sanders alternative

ARLINGTON, Virginia — As Bernie Sanders cements his place as the 2020 front-runner while more centrist candidates split the vote and face pressure from pundits to drop out and coalesce around a strong alternative that can halt him from taking a delegate lead. Moderate voters, however, don't feel the same way. "The primary process is functioning very well, actually. I like the fact that everybody is out here supporting a wide field of candidates," said Genevieve Zeltan, 44, a supporter of former South Bend, Indiana, Mayor Pete Buttigieg at a rally for the candidate in Arlington, Virginia, on Sunday. "I don't think that individual people should be trying to strategize party political strategy," said Zeltan, a Herndon, Virginia, resident who runs a marketing company. "They should be out there supporting the candidates that they like the best." Billionaire former New York City Mayor Mich...

Eagle Slant seeks to provide 'rock-solid' conservative alternative to Drudge Report

As far as Derek Christensen is concerned, there can't be too many Drudge Report alternatives, which is one reason he started his own. The former Army specialist and Afghanistan veteran last month launched Eagle Slant, the latest conservative news-aggregation website to take on Matt Drudge's 23-year-old standard-bearer since it began what critics describe as its leftward drift under President Trump. ...

I told her that he had taken escitalopram for a long time with no problems. However, during his subsequent office visit, the cardiologist persuaded him to stop taking escitalopram. I didn't know this until several weeks later when, after noticing a marked increase in his depression symptoms, I asked if he had stopped taking it. He confirmed he had. These are my concerns: It doesn't seem like a good idea to stop taking the depress...

Dems hope Gospel message gives the faithful an alternative to Trump

NEW YORK (AP) â€" When Pete Buttigieg launched his first statewide television ad in South Carolina two months ago, its opening lines may have sounded familiar to a churchgoer. The ad opens with footage from a speech by the former South Bend, Indiana, mayor in which Buttigieg says that if he's elected president, Americans wouldn't have to ask themselves, "Whatever happened to, 'I was hungry and you fed me? I was a stranger and you welcomed me?' " Buttigieg is hardly the first Democrat to invoke the biblical verses of Matthew 25 in which Jesus Christ reminds his followers that their true measure comes from how they treat "the least of these my brethren." Former President Barack Obama quoted from that biblical passage in 2008, while addressing popular megachurch pastor Rick Warren's congregation during his first White House bid, and a political action committee that helped Obama's campaign that year was dub...
